ADST
CompuTech Advanced 9/10 is a blended and online project-based course where students learn the basics of computing from the hardware to the software, exploring the interaction between the two directly using the Raspberry Pi Pico, developing higher-level computing skills through explorations of alternative operating systems, networking, and remote computing, and putting it all together by learning and applying computer programming using the text-based Python programming language. Some prior experience with programming is encouraged, such as CompuTech 8, but equivalent knowledge and skills are also acceptable. Students will be expected to provide any extra materials they may need if they choose to create hardware-based projects, but base Raspberry Pi Picos will be supplied.

Computer Programming 11

ADST

In this introductory online programming course, students will use Unity to learn the fundamentals of programming in the context of creating their own projects. During the course, they will use the Unity and Visual Studio software development kit and integrated development environment in conjunction with the video-course to create several prototypes along with the instructor, and learn to manage a larger personal project more independently. The skills that they learn will align with the learning objectives from the Unity Certified User exam, providing them with a foundational understanding of Unity and C# programming, preparing them for certification. In addition to these core technical competencies, students will learn how to manage a project from start to finish: coming up with a concept, creating a project plan, prioritizing tasks, and hitting milestones. By the end of the course, students will have the confidence that, given enough time and resources, they can create anything they want with Unity and C#. This Unity-produced video-based course will be run as a “flipped class”-style online course in which students will be expected to regularly participate in online forums and bi-weekly video-conference class meetings. A reasonably powerful computer will be needed to run the Unity editor and development environment.

As you explore everything from the earth’s origins to the complexity of war and peace in the world today, you will also create your very own island. In addition, you will be setting yourself up as a stronger writer, which will stand you in good stead for coursework in the future!

The demands on the parent are remarkably minimal for this course. Especially if the student is a diligent, independent worker, it is likely that this will be a “lighter” load with regards to required support.

Peer Tutoring 11

Other

This course is a combination of research, self-reflection, tutoring and applying what you have learned.

Teaching and tutoring are not methods to give students answers, but to help them understand the process of learning.  For example, if you give a child a cookie – do they know how to make cookies?  No, but if you teach them how to make cookies, they will then make their own cookies and eventually will have the confidence to make something different – they may eventually make their own recipes and become a chef!  But, that will not happen if you only give them cookies – or answers.

Science

This course provides an exploration of biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science topics. We will take a microscopic look at the universe, exploring cells, the tiny building blocks of life, and atoms, the smallest indivisable particles of matter, before investigating two types of waves: electromagnetic and seismic. The course is designed to respond to students’ individual learning needs and is made up of a wide variety of learning experiences, assignments, and projects which allow students to glean information from both text and audio-visual materials and to express their learning through a spectrum of project types. Students are expected to participate in a monthly virtual class. Students should expect to spend approximately 3.5 hours on the course each week. Parents will need to be actively involved in keeping students on track at home and supervising infrequent tests.

Social Studies

Social Studies 8 is a study of world history from the years 800-1750. The topics will cover events from the Crusades through the Renaissance and The Age of Enlightenment through the Reformation. The course will include perspectives of: history, commerce/industry, culture, politics/wars, science and faith, (world views).

This world history course will cover the major topics in and around Europe from a Biblical-Christian perspective.  This long stretch of time and the massive amount of information will not allow us to cover this time period by looking at all the continents and what was happening during this time period. Nor, will it allow for many of the different perspectives of history; who and how it was written, commerce/industry, culture, politics/wars, science and faith (world views). Some of the lessons will cover these areas in general, or for example, a student may choose to go into depth about a particular topic covering transportation and commerce during a particular time period.

Students will make connections from the past to present day. The decisions they make in light of the information they are willing to search out, analyse and interpret will reflect on how they think and eventually act.

STEM 7 integrates the learning requirements for Science, Technology and Math into one course. The activities encompass a variety of online and hands-on tasks that are broken down into a weekly schedule within the course so students can easily follow along and ensure they are on track to finish by the end of the year.

This course uses a variety of Gizmos, worksheets, online resources, videos, and hands-on activities. There are two textbooks for the course that supplement learning for both math and science. A student should plan to spend at least three hours each week to gain the most learning from the activities in the course and remain on track to finish in June. Parents should plan to help their child manage their time, check that all tasks from each week have been completed and provide assistance for a concept that is proving harder to learn. The teacher will generally include parents in responses to student questions however students are expected to contact the course teacher independently as needed.

STEM is a multi-discipline course where students receive individual credit for Math 7, Science 7 and ADST 7.  Each course is broken down into two basic areas.  The mark for each course is calculated based on the total mark received for each category when added together.

If sewing is your thing, then you will love this class! You will be challenged to create projects at a more advanced level. Pattern drafting and modifications will be explored as you incorporate your own creativity and develop your own unique sense of style. Although projects are mainly completed with a sewing machine, becoming familiar with using a serger to create beautiful textile projects is encouraged. Personalizing your projects by adding hand-sewn embellishments and a variety of sewing techniques will allow you to develop a portfolio of projects.
