As the great-great-granddaughter of famous Canadian artist, Paul Kane, I have been studying the HBC from a young age. You see, Paul travelled with the HBC Company across Canada sketching Indigenous peoples in their everyday lives. His sketchbooks are in the ROM, but I grew up with them in my home, along with his oil paintings, brushes, and some artifacts. Canada was basically built up in partnership with the HBC, their histories woven together for eternity. There are many layers to this story, our origin story, and that of colonialism vs Indigenous persons – we will talk about it all, with the help of my gg-grandfather’s art!
