Imagine you’re a scientist who has discovered several unknown substances—but the periodic table has disappeared. No element names. No symbols. No atomic numbers.
How would you figure out what these substances are?
In this lab, you won’t be memorizing the periodic table—you’ll rebuild its logic using real materials and hands-on testing. By observing properties such as conductivity, reactivity, magnetism, and appearance, you will uncover patterns that scientists use to organize elements. You’ll group substances based on evidence, predict where they belong on the periodic table, and even identify a mystery element using scientific reasoning.
This investigation reflects how scientists=classify materials by observing behavior, use, and interaction with the environment. By the end of the activity, you’ll see that the periodic table isn’t random at all—it’s a map that explains how matter behaves in the real world.
