This course introduces students to basic electrical engineering and military communications history by building a functional paper circuit telegraph to transmit Morse code messages.
Student Overview
- Hands-On Engineering: Learn circuit concepts like polarity, current flow, and conductivity while assembling a low-voltage paper telegraph circuit with copper tape, LEDs, switches, and coin cell batteries.
- Interactive Encryption: Work in pairs to send and decode encrypted historical messages across the room using light signals.
- Real-World Applications: Calculate transmission speeds in Words Per Minute (WPM) and explore circuit troubleshooting techniques.
Parent Overview
- Curriculum Alignment: Designed for grades 5–12, integrating physical science, mathematics, history, and hands-on engineering.
- Safety First: Projects rely exclusively on low-voltage components (3V coin cell batteries) with no soldering or unsafe power sources required.
- Skills Developed: Critical thinking, practical physics, troubleshooting skills, and an understanding of historical technology in WWI and WWII.
