Facilitated (online) by Ms. Michelle Smid, who has her degree in Indigenous Studies from Thompson River University.

Students in grade 3,4 and 5 will explore the rich histories, traditions, and innovations of three Coast Salish nations: the Squamish, Stó:lō, and Tsawwassen First Nations. Through storytelling and inquiry-based learning, students will investigate how these communities shaped and sustained their cultures through deep connections to land, water, and kinship.

During our three online classes together we will cover topics that will include:

  • 🛖 Community Life & Structures – Discover how these nations organized their villages and governed themselves, including the role of Elders and oral traditions.
  • 🪓 Tools & Technology – Explore traditional tools used for fishing, carving, cooking, and crafting, as well as innovations suited to coastal living.
  • 🌲 Shelters & Environments – Learn about longhouses and seasonal dwellings, and how geography influenced housing design and materials.
  • 🐟 Food & Sustainability – Study traditional diets including salmon, shellfish, berries, and how food practices respected the environment.
  • 🧬 Social Organization & Values – Understand the importance of family, storytelling, ceremonial practices, and spiritual beliefs.
