Poetry is often thought
to be a subject which one ought
to have to think about a lot
and thus is often not well-taught.
In fact, to read a poem should be
akin to climbing up a tree
and swinging from a branch, so free
it’s intellectual PE!
So join my class and have some fun
with poetry you’ll love a ton,
while learning information
about how writing poems is done.
— an original meta-poem about learning about poetry, by Mr. Hewlett
This will be a class designed to inspire an appreciation of poetry by engaging with “fun” poems, taking that engagement as an opportunity to explore how poems work by learning about some basic traditional poetry terms. If students are interested, a final project of writing and refining and sharing an original poem can be attempted. Suitable for students who like to read in Grades 7 and up.
