There are many reasons why a family may apply to TLA Online in the weeks just before or after the official start of the school year. While the majority of TLA families enrolled in Spring 2025 for this school year, a significant number of families applied in late August and continue to apply this week. If you are in the latter camp and have applied recently, don’t worry!
If you are new to home learning, you might be concerned about your child starting late and falling behind. You may be waiting to connect with a teacher to set up your program and order resources, or your high school child might be figuring out how to navigate new online courses. You might even be waiting for an application to be processed. Take comfort in knowing that many long-term home learning families start late and/or finish early by choice! Let’s say “it’s a feature, not a bug” of online learning that timelines are very flexible and goal-oriented. As our K-9 VP Steve Borley is fond of saying, “make school fit into life rather than making life conform to school” (poor paraphrasing but you get the idea).
Whether learning and development goals are in a student learning plan, an individualized education plan, or an online course, there are always ways to keep the mind and body active while waiting for more structured plans to take shape for resources to arrive. For starters, you can browse and sign-out books from our online library (access link posted in the library section of our weekly online bulletin). Whether you’ve started or not, take advantage of the lovely weather while we still have it! It looks like the smokey air has mostly cleared around the province.
Hopefully you are not among the “worried and concerned” as we start the year. If you are, I encourage you to reach out for help to the teacher or teachers you are working with. You can still start the year out on a positive, exciting, and joyful note!
Wishing you the very best as you get started.
Blessings,
Mr. Gabe Linder
