Karen Effa

Blended

Growing up in Kelowna, Karen’s love of learning was kindled by a childhood full of books and outdoor nature studies. When her first child was still a pre-schooler, she was introduced to homeschooling by a friend. The sampling of kindergarten curriculum she discovered to support constructive play launched her on an annual search for the best educational materials and into almost two decades of homeschooling. Presenting at Heritage Christian Home School Conferences allowed her to share with other parents what she had learned, encouraging them in their journey. With the end of the home schooling season in sight, Karen went back to school, completing a Bachelor of Science in Education through Liberty University. With her children pursuing careers in law, accounting, and nursing, Karen launched an education services company, Able Now Learning, which offers pre-school enrichment support, homeschool consulting, tutoring, and conference speaking. Teaching part-time at TLA has been a perfect match with her interests and background. Always on the lookout for becoming a better teacher, Karen starts a Master of Education: Imaginative Learning this fall (2017) at Simon Fraser University on a part-time basis.

As a devout Christian, Karen gives God praise for the many blessings in her life, and trusts Him to see her through the very difficult circumstances. In her leisure time, Karen enjoys catching up with her children and spending time with her husband of 29 years. Reading, hiking, kayaking, and tennis are also at the top of her list.
