SUMMARY:Florence Nightingale Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Field trip information:\n\nFlorence Nightingale Day 2026 at Simon Fraser University is coming up! This one-day event is part of an international celebration that gives high school students\, especially those from traditionally under-represented groups\, a chance to explore educational and career opportunities in statistical sciences. It is named after Florence Nightingale\, the widely known founder of modern nursing who was also a ground-breaking statistician credited with inventing the pie chart. \nIn British Columbia\, Florence Nightingale Day 2026 will be co-hosted on Friday\, May 1\, by the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI) and Simon Fraser University (SFU)’s Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science. The day has three goals: \n\nTo give participants an understanding of the strong benefits of studying statistics for their future career paths\nTo give participants a glimpse of what studying statistics in university is like\nTo promote diversity in statistics and data science by encouraging and inspiring high school students from all communities to explore statistics\n\nLunch is free for all participating students and teachers! \nWhat Happens at Florence Nightingale Day? What does the day look like?  \nLast year\, the day started with an icebreaker and a panel of various companies (Microsoft etc).  Then there was a break\, with snacks (muffins etc) provided.  After the break\, students did some activities to see data collection in real time.  A pizza lunch was provided\, and then we had a personalized tour of SFU. \nCheck out these stories and photos from past events: \n\nFlorence Nightingale Day 2024(opens in a new tab)\nFlorence Nightingale Day 2023\n\nFRIDAY\, May 1\, 2025 \nRecommended for Grades 10 – 12 \n\nMeeting at Hawthorne Campus:  5741 176th street\, Surrey BC. at 9:30am and taking a bus to SFU.  We will be leaving SFU at 4:00pm.\nWhere: Hawthorne Campus:  5741 176th street\, Surrey BC.  And SFU Burnaby Campus.\nCost: $10 per student\nLunch is provided!!  (Please bring a lunch if you have food sensitivities as I do not know what will be provided.)\nPlease dress for the weather as some of the SFU tour will be outside.\nContact Person/Information: Joyce Froese\,  jfroese@schoolathome.ca\, 1-800-745-1320 ext 365Sign-up deadline: Thursday\, April 16\, 2026  *SFU needs the names of all participants in advance \n\n \n*Maximum number of students is 10
