TLA Innovations:Online 5-8 (IO 5-8)
Online Project-Based Learning for Grades 5-8
Innovations Online 5-8 is a community class that is offered online to students throughout BC. There are two main aims of the class; the first aim is to connect students throughout the province so that they can learn from one another and develop a sense of community related to TLA; the second aim is to teach students (and vicariously, their parents) how to use project-based learning and the process of inquiry to engage with topics of interests, thereby covering the prescribed learning outcomes in a variety of areas.
Students meet twice a week using Google Hangouts. The first session more closely resembles a class format where students participate in activities, share their ideas related to a specific topic and receive any instruction about further work for the week. Throughout the week students are expected to work through any follow-up tasks assigned and to engage in research for the current topic being explored.
Students who wish to participate in IO 5-8 should be motivated learners who are able to articulate topics of interest to them. Strong reading comprehension skills are an asset to ensure they are able to engage with any written materials needed or assigned. A basic understanding of how to research a topic using the internet or library is recommended.
Students should think of themselves less as being “taught” and more as being guided and mentored. Concepts are not lectured about, rather students generate questions and collaborate about how they might be answered. The teacher of the cohort provides response activities for topics discussed in class as well as prep activities that will introduce ideas in advance of class time. A response activity might look like creating a comic strip or idea web and prep activities might consist of watching a video or reading an article and generating questions and ideas to share in class. It is expected that learning happens not only during class times but also as students engage with the activities and ideas throughout the week. For more information, see IO 5-8 FAQs below.
Cross-curricular, problem-solving learning focusing on the development of 4 core competencies: Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration and Community are the outcomes of our TLA Innovations program.
This program offers credit for high school subjects in grades 5-8 through problem-based projects for most grade 5-8 core and elective courses.
