13. SALTS – Sail & Life Training Society
The Sail and Life Training Society (SALTS) was founded in 1974 and is a registered charity in both Canada and the USA. The Society operates two tall ships, the Pacific Grace and Pacific Swift, and offers sail training to young people ages 13-27 (as well as Day Sails for all ages). These ships are maintained at the SALTS Heritage Shipyard at 203 Harbour Road, Victoria BC.
Each year, 2000 young people have the life changing experience of learning to sail a tall ship with SALTS. Voyages take them to the Gulf Islands of BC each spring and fall, and in the summer the ships circumnavigate Vancouver Island. Every few years SALTS conducts an offshore voyage to ports around the world. Young people from all socio-economic backgrounds participate, and a bursary program covers costs for those who cannot afford to pay. SALTS partners with numerous other youth organizations to provide bursaries to youth who are at-risk, from low income households, or from challenging life situations.
Young “trainees” learn all aspects of sailing the ship. They are split into three “watch” groups and given responsibilities as training crew. At least one watch is always on duty, working in shifts both day and night. Duties include taking the wheel of the ship, bow watch, sail handling, anchor watch, navigation, radio monitoring, small boat handling, galley chores, etc. Formal instruction is given regarding sailing theory, rules of the road, sailing terminology, knots, etc. Trainees work their way through the SALTS sail training curriculum. Shore trips to beautiful coastal islands and rousing evening mug-ups with games, stories, and singing make for an exciting and diverse experience.
Trainees are encouraged to develop a strong work ethic and take on responsibility. They learn about teamwork and cooperation, because it takes everyone’s participation to sail the ship. They develop relational skills, learn to deal with interpersonal conflict, and live in close community. Most report an increase in confidence as a result of overcoming their fears and succeeding in challenges—such as climbing the rigging 115’ in the air on a moving ship! Intentional discussions at meal times and informal conversations provide opportunities for “life training” and mentorship.
For additional information please check the website.

3.JOYFUL MOTION DANCE- Committed To Glorifying God Through Dance
About Joyful Motion
http://www.jomotion.ca/?q=about
GENERAL HISTORY
“Joyful Motion” Started in 2003 as a free class out of Peace Portal Alliance Church for the community kids by an amazing lady named Karyn. She started with one class for all school ages! Gradually more and more kids joined and the classes were just too big! Joslynn Pickard came onboard to help with the class load in Winter ’05/Spring ’06 and here we are today! It’s truly amazing to see what the Lord has done with this program!
A LITTLE ABOUT THE TEACHER
Formal training & accomplishments: Currently training at Harbour Dance Center. Extensive training in Lyrical Jazz & Hip-Hop (1999 – Present)
Professional Training in Ballet (1997 – 2001) completed the Royal Acadamy of Dance Grade Syllabus and high level I.S.T.D. Ballet Syllabus
Performed for Disneyland’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. Choreographer and Dancer for various dance companies / recitals / productions / special events
Choreographer for various Church Productions. The emphasis of my classes is on worshiping God through your own movement. Technique will still be a large part of class, but the focus will be on how much God has blessed us and this is how we give back to him out of thanks.
This season is going to be an awesome journey! Please join me in exploring a new level of worship though using your whole body. I am looking forward to seeing familiar faces as well as some new additions.
See you all Soon & Lots of Love,
Miss Joslynn

13.SALTS – Sail & Life Training Society

23.BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation Teen Driving Awareness for Parents
Teenage Driving
This NEWS bulletin from the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation – Young Drivers Program directs your attention to:
- New cell phone restrictions
- Resources for families of teens and young drivers
- WorkSafeBC’s Shift Into Winter campaign
Less than 4 weeks to go!
NEW CELL PHONE LAWS for drivers come into effect January 1, 2010.
Highlights:
• All drivers are restricted to one button hands-free only use, on built-in or securely fixed units.
• New drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) are not permitted to use any electronic communications device, no hand-held and no hands-free.
To view the exact details of the changes to the BC Motor Vehicles Act go to www.teendrivers.ca and scroll to the bottom of the page.
It is a big temptation to answer that ring. Our advice, turn your cell phone off before you enter the vehicle! Your answering message could say :
“I am currently unavailable or driving, and will return the call when it is safe to do so”.
A family rule like the above for everyone in your household helps your young novice (N) driver not feel singled out for different treatment.
Did you know?
… that cell phone use while driving is the number one cause of distracted driving? On average, approximately 117 people die each year in B.C. and 1,400 are sent to hospital because someone was not paying attention behind the wheel.
… the risk of a collision when using a cellular telephone is four times higher than the risk when a cellular telephone is not being used.
See other research findings at: www.bcaatsf.ca and click at upper right on hot topics
***
Novice drivers are at greater risk. They are almost 45% more likely to be involved in a crash than experienced drivers.
Our Young Drivers Program is here to help with every aspect of the learn-to-drive process. Consider adapting our in-depth family contract to your own needs, and if your teen is talking about getting their L and N, check out our website www.teendrivers.ca for:
- on-line resources,
- a schedule of workshops, and
- how to bring a workshop to your own community.
