TLA Direct Classes

TLA offers classes and workshops for registered and enrolled students, and occasionally for parents, at the TLA centre and in local community facilities. The purpose of these is to offer program enrichment and socialization opportunities. In order to receive the greatest benefit and to avoid confusion, parents are asked to follow these guidelines:
Payment and Refunds
Full payment is due at the time of registration to hold a place in the program. If cancellations are made five or more business days prior to the start of the program, a full refund will be issued. Any less than five business days notice, no refund can be given for any reason unless the program is cancelled by TLA. If registered children are not able to attend a day or days of the program for their own reasons (illness, lack of transportation, etc.) they will not be refunded.
Weather
In the event of an inclement weather cancellation, families will receive notification by phone at least 1 hour before the program start time. An attempt to reschedule the class will be made. No refunds will be given – even if you cannot attend the re-scheduled class.
Medical Forms
Parents/guardians must complete an emergency medical form for each registered child before he/she will be allowed to participate in the program. Any child requiring medication (including over-the-counter medications) during the program will provide it in the original packaging, clearly labeled with the dosage, frequency of administration and the healthcare provider’s name and phone number. The reason for taking the medication must be disclosed on the child’s medical form.
Drop-Off/Pick-Up
Please plan to arrive promptly for your class and arrange for prompt pickup. Pickups by persons other than the designated parent/guardian require a signed note from the designated parent/guardian. Verbal arrangements are permitted.
Dress
Children should dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather and activities for the day. For outdoor programs, closed-toed shoes are required. Raincoats are encouraged on rainy days as activities may not be confined to one building. Boots, warm socks, warm coats, hats and mittens are required for participation in outdoor winter activities.
Food
Children must bring their own lunch if the program spans the lunch hour. Children are not permitted to share food. Because of food allergies, TLA requests that families avoid sending along foods that contain peanut products. A water bottle is also encouraged. No gum is permitted.
Behaviour and Student Code of Conduct
Classes are held in good faith that those involved will respect and preserve the TLA office, classrooms and its furnishings or those of any community facility. Any misuse of property will require parents of guilty students to pay for repairs and/or replacements needed. Students may then be asked to leave classes, depending on the seriousness or frequency of the infraction.
Students should conduct themselves modestly and appropriately. The primary purpose of the classes is to instruct students, and any behavior that distracts any student from learning, whether during or between classes, may be questioned by the teachers and staff. Students will either amend their behavior or be asked to leave classes. This behavior includes how adults or students are respected, what clothing students choose to wear, public displays of affection, choice of activities between classes, and other matters that may detract from the learning and moral environment.
Parent Involvement
Parents will for the most part leave their children with the teacher for the duration of the class. If parents or family members wish to observe or participate in the classes they should make their request known to the teacher. Due to space restrictions, student numbers or potential distractions, it may not always be possible to accommodate these requests.
Special Needs
Many of the classes offered by TLA are taught by teachers, students who have graduated recently or parents. They may or may not have had experience with instructing students with special needs. Therefore, we request that a meeting is held involving the instructor, the parent and the Special Needs Coordinator to determine if the child may attend classes, with or without TA support.
Emergencies and Accidents
In the case of an accident occurring in the school, on the grounds, or at a school function an incident report must be completed. Incident report forms are available from the office or from any staff member. The incident report must be filed in within 24 hours.
In the case of a serious accident requiring emergency treatment, the principal or the principal’s delegate must take the action s/he thinks is required for treatment. This may include:
- Referral to the staff member with the most current First Aid Certification.
- Obtaining immediate professional medical aid.
- The parent will be contacted immediately and asked to return to the TLA office or local facility.
- The removal of the student from the school will be done with the approval of, and under the direction of, medical authorities, whenever possible.
The Class Registration Form allows us to identify Special Needs children. Each SN student is required to have assistance from a parent and/or an SEA at all times. It is not the teacher’s responsibility to adapt program materials or lessons for SN students. Arrangements may be agreed upon prior to the classes in consultation with the SN teacher and the class teacher.
